The Fawn Story

Once upon a time, living in the woods,
A Mule Deer fawn seemed curious of me.
I wanted to share with her all my goods:
vegetables of the soil, fruits of the tree,
human gentleness, and love of my heart,
before she's taught to fear humankind.
For her, I wanted a different start;
To humanity's ways, she would be blind.

Her mother discovered us one morning,
and watched, overlooking, from far away.
The doe rushed in to give me a warning,
but she, too, came to trust me on that day.
Each morning the fawn came to visit me.
It was a real 'Love affair' of some sort.
In my presence, she would lay and feel free.
When I left, our 'Love affair' was cut short.

Winter has passed and it's summer again,
and I've returned to the very same spot,
and reminisce and remember when
I made friends with the fawn, I'd forgot.
Now a young wild doe comes right up to me.
She lets me pet her and eats from my hand.
Such an enrapturing reality
was meant for all humans to understand.

My nourishing Love helped her to survive
winter's starvation and hunting season.
I'm ecstatic to see that she's still alive,
And proud that I am part of the reason.
Our friendship endured the snow and the hail
It endured through all human-imposed strife.
Befriending that fawn is a fairy tale
that actually came true in real life.
